CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – SIUE volleyball closed out a four-match road swing with a three-set victory Saturday at Austin Peay.

The Cougars improved to 10-15 overall and 2-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 25-18 triumph over the Governors to sweep the season series. Austin Peay fell to 11-15 overall and 5-5 in the OVC.

That sets up the Cougars to return to the Vadalabene Center next week on a positive note. SIUE has five of its final six regular season matches at home.

"We had a lot of balance on the court and was able to hit anywhere we wanted," said SIUE Head Coach Leah Johnson.

Ashley Witt led three SIUE players with double figures kills. The freshman outside hitter posted 13 kills. Kristen Torre and Taylor Held followed with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.

Held and SIUE setter Mallory Mangun each finished with double-doubles. Held combined her 10 kills with 10 digs. Mangun collected a team-best 13 digs along with her 28 assists.

The Cougars opened the match with a pair of hard-fought wins in the first two sets. It was a kill by Torre and an Austin Peay attack error that made the difference in the first set. Back-to-back kills by Emily Harrison and Mangun with the second set tied 23-23 gave SIUE a two-set cushion.

Johnson said most of the long rallies during the match went SIUE's way and proved to be the difference-maker in the match.

"I thought everyone was effective," said Johnson. "We're swinging with more control. We are finding some rhythm, which is nice."

Austin Peay fought back in the third set by hitting .536 on 17 kills. SIUE ran away with the fourth and deciding set with a balanced attack that saw five different players with two or more kills.

SIUE returns to the Vadalabene Center Friday with a 7 p.m. match against UT Martin.
