BUIES CREEK, N.C. – SIUE split the opening matches of its five-day road trip with a 23-10 victory over Gardner-Webb and a 20-18 loss to host Campbell.

SIUE is now 2-2 in Southern Conference (SoCon) matches and 5-15 overall.

"We wrestled really hard so I can't be upset with our efforts," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates.

Five SIUE wrestlers won both of their matches Wednesday. Josh Wood led the Cougars at 197 pounds. The Cougar senior picked up a pin over Campbell's Garrison Matthews in 2 minutes, 43 seconds as well as 7-4 decision over Gardner-Webb's Boyce Cornwell.

SIUE's other double winners were John Petrov (141), Matt Lester (165), Jake Residori (174), and Deshoun White (184).

"John picked up his first two wins in two seasons, and he's wrestling up a weight," said Spates.

Both Lester and White each won sudden victory matches against Campbell. Spates said overtime matches is something his team talked about in the preseason.

"We've done a good job on overtime," said Spates. "We decided early we were going to train hard so we would be ready for those types of matches. We've been consistent so that's nice."

The Cougars dominated the first match of the night, winning seven of 10 matches against Gardner-Webb. Residori and David Devine, at 285 pounds, both recorded major decisions.

SIUE came from behind to win four consecutive matches late against Campbell but fell short in the team scoring. Campbell's Eloheim Palma edged Devine 8-6 in the final match of the evening.
