Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's soccer opened their conference season with a 3-1 victory over Eastern Illinois.
"It's a great feeling to be able to start with a win, which we haven't been able to do for the past couple of years," said Head Coach Derek Burton.
Freshman Mariah Vollmer scored her first career goal in the second minute of the game. From the top of the box, she netted a ball to the far right post. The goal was assisted by freshman Emily Grahl.
The Panthers answered with a goal of their own in the 19th minute from Megan Radloff.
The Cougars were able to regain the lead in the second half with a goal from Michelle Auer. The goal, which was scored from 13 yards out to the far right post, was again assisted by Grahl. The goal is Auer's fourth of the season, which is the most in a season for the senior.
SIUE sealed the victory with a goal in the 84th minute from Kayla Delgado. An initial shot from Delgado hit the cross bar and was followed by several SIUE players. Alexandra Johnson and Ashlyn Walter both assisted Delgado's touch in for her second goal of the season.
SIUE dominated the game with 21 shots to EIU's 5. Goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley ended the game with two saves.
"We've talked a lot as a team about the importance of holding ourselves accountable as players and athletes and making an impact," said Burton. "We had a lot of players step in today and do the things we asked."
The Cougars stay at home for Friday and Sunday games next weekend against conference oponents Murray State and UT Martin.
