Box Score NORMAN, Okla. – SIUE managed just five hits in a 9-1 to Oklahoma Sunday in the finale of a weekend baseball series at L. Dale Mitchell Field.
SIUE fell to 0-3 after the weekend which included a pair of losses to Oklahoma and a loss to Notre Dame. Oklahoma improved to 3-2 with the win.
"Overall this weekend we played with some jitters," SIUE Head Coach Tony Stoecklin said. "We let our nerves get to us. We were completely off our games."
Oklahoma scored a single runs in the second and third innings against SIUE starter Mike Miller. Miller allowed just the two runs, only one earned, on two hits over three innings. He walked two and struck out two.
"Mike Miller looked good in his start," Stoecklin said. "He showed me he wants to start again."
Oklahoma tacked on five unearned runs on just a single hit in the fourth inning against reliever Caleb Wilkerson. The Cougars committed three errors in the inning. Wilkerson pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing the five earned runs. He walked three and did not strike out a batter.
"Our pitcher failed to throw enough strikes; when that happens your defense kind of goes to sleep," Stoecklin said.
Brendan Miller allowed a run and walked five over 1 1/3 innings. Jacob Stewart tossed two innings in relief, allowing a run on two hits.
The only SIUE run came in the sixth inning. Parker Guinn led off the inning with a double. Guinn scored on a groundout by Denton Reed which made it 8-1.
Aside from Guinn, Nick Lombardo, Austin Verschoore, Zach Little, and Chase Green each had single hits. Green has had a hit in each of the season's first three games and has a hit in 20 straight games dating back to last year.
Oklahoma's Robert Tasin started and tossed five scoreless innings for the win. He struck out three. Austin O'Brien led the Sooners at the plate. He was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a run.
The Cougars return to action for a three-game series at Oral Roberts Friday-Sunday.
