Redhawks Even Series with Cougars

Box Score

EWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Southeast Missouri starter Joey Lucchesi struck out 11 hitters over seven innings Saturday as the Redhawks took game two of a three-game series 10-0 over SIUE.

The Cougars dropped to 9-12 overall and 9-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference, maintaining a one-game edge over Southeast with the win. The Redhawks are 16-10 overall and 8-3 in the OVC.

"Pitching and defense is what wins games," SIUE Head Coach Tony Stoecklin said. "Southeast Missouri did that today. They had no errors and they didn't give up many hits."

Lucchesi improved to 4-0 with the win. He allowed just two hits and walked three.

"He did a nice job," Stoecklin said of Lucchesi. "He had our hitters baffled."

Brady Wright and Ryan Lenanburg closed out the game for Southeast with a scoreless inning each.

Chase Green, Dustin Woodcock, and Austin Verschoore each had a single hit for the Cougars.

The Redhawks capitalized on a pair of SIUE errors in the fifth, scoring three times to snap a scoreless tie. SIUE starter P.J. Schuster allowed four consecutive hits to start the sixth inning and Southeast scored twice more to make it 5-0.

Schuster pitched six innings, allowing the five runs, just two earned, on eight hits. He struck out five and walked just one.

"I thought P.J. did well," Stoecklin said. "He went out there and did his job. We didn't make a couple of plays behind him or we could have a zero-zero game going into the seventh."

Cougar reliever Mike Miller allowed five runs in 1 2/3 innings. He allowed two hits, walked three and did not strike out a batter.

Garrett Gandolfo was 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs to lead Southeast Missouri. Dalton Hewitt was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Scott Mitchell also was 2 for 4.

Forecasted afternoon rain has pushed the start of Sunday's finale to 11 a.m. at Simmons Complex. The game can be heard live on 88.7 FM WSIE.

"Our goal is still achievable," Stoecklin said. "It's not to sweep it's to win the series."
