Redhawks Earn Sunday Win to Take Series

EWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Southeast Missouri State scored 22 times on 18 hits Sunday for a 22-8 win over SIUE in the final game of a three-game series at Simmons Baseball Complex.

The Redhawks won two of three to hand SIUE its first Ohio Valley Conference series loss of the year.

"(Southeast Missouri) came in here and competed," SIUE Head Coach Tony Stoecklin said. They did their job which was to win the series."

The Cougars and Redhawks are tied atop the OVC standings with identical 9-3 records. The Cougars dropped to 9-13 overall. Southeast Missouri is 18-10 overall.

The two teams took advantage of windy conditions combining for six home runs for the day.

The Cougars took a 3-0 lead after one inning. Parker Guinn connected for his OVC-leading seventh home run of the season. The three-run shot followed two walks. The Cougars added a run in the second inning on a groundout by Nick Lombardo and two runs in the third on a solo home run by Mario Tursi and an RBI-double from Lombardo and led 6-2 after three innings.

Southeast Missouri broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring eight times on seven hits.

Redhawks leftfielder collected his first career home run in the inning, a three-run shot down the left field line. He finished the day 2 for 5 with two homers and five RBIs.

Southeast scored two more runs in the fifth inning, added four in the sixth and eighth innings, and two in the ninth for the final margin.

The Cougars got RBIs from Denton Reed in the fifth inning and Skyler Geissinger in the sixth.

Guinn finished the day 1 for 1 with the homer, three RBIs, and three walks. Tursi was 2 for 3. Chase Green was 2 for 4.

Dalton Hewitt was 3 for 3 with a home run, three walks and six RBIs for Southeast. Branden Boggetto was 3 for 5 with an RBI and three runs.

The Redhawks took full advantage of 16 walks issued by the SIUE pitching staff.

Cougar starter Jarrett Bednar (0-4) suffered the loss. Bednar pitched just 3 1/3 innings. He allowed nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits. He walked one and struck out two. Brett Thomas allowed six runs on six hits and five walks in 1 2/3 innings. Zach Malach allowed four runs on a hit and seven walks over 2 2/3 innings. Brendan Miller allowed three runs on two hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings.

"It's a simple fact that you're not going to win any ballgames when you have the amount of walks we had today. Our pitching was downright awful."

SIUE heads on the road for a three-game OVC series at Belmont Thursday-Saturday. With a win Sunday Belmont would pull into a three-way tie for first place with SIUE and Southeast Missouri.

"No series has more importance than the other," Stoecklin said. "They're all important. They all count the same in wins and losses."
