Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – SIUE women's soccer saw its season come to end Friday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Northwestern eliminated the Cougars with a 1-0 win at Duke's Koskinen Stadium.
The Cougars finish the season at 10-8-5 after advancing to the second round of the Division I Tournament for the first time in school history.
"This season has been impressive, enjoyable and historic in a lot of ways," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "I couldn't be more proud of what we accomplished. That said, it doesn't take the sting out of a game we could have had."
Northwestern improved to 16-2-4 and will move on to meet either Duke or Illinois State in the third round Sunday.
The lone goal of the game came in the 10th minute from Northwestern's Kassidy Gorman. Kaitlin Moore sent a long pass over the top where Gorman was able to run on to it, creating a breakaway against SIUE goalkeeper Juli Rossi. Rossi charged out of the goal, but Gorman was able to slide the ball under her for the game-winner.
"We could have started the game better," Burton added. "We didn't quite do enough today."
Northwestern finished with an 11-5 advantage in shots. Rossi made eight saves in the game including several leaping or diving stops.
"She was on her toes," Burton said. "She was ready to make a difference. Going into next year she's going to have a lot of confidence. She has certainly been a bright spot for us as of late."
Caroline Hoefert led SIUE with two total shots. Hoefert and Alexis Royal each had a shot on goal for the Cougars.
Wildcats' keeper Lauren Clem recorded two saves for Northwestern.
