Chandler Pitches Southeast Past SIUE

Box Score

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri got past SIUE in a well-pitched game Saturday. The Redhawks defeated the Cougars 4-0 in game two of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference baseball series at Capaha Field.

The Cougars fell to 4-19 overall and 2-9 in the OVC. Southeast Missouri has won nine straight games and improved to 19-8 overall and 11-0 in the OVC.

Southeast Missouri righthander Clay Chandler twirled a four-hit shutout, striking out 11 Cougars hitters. He moved to 4-0 with the win.

"He was pretty good," SIUE Head Coach Tony Stoecklin said. "He had good command of his fastball and a good slider and he could throw either one in any count for a strike."

SIUE starter Jarett Bednar (0-6) tossed seven innings in the start for SIUE. He allowed three runs on eight hits. He struck out three.

"Jarrett pitched great," Stoecklin said. "He knows he has no control over what our hitters do and what our defense does behind him. He knows how to control what he can control and he does that."

Southeast Missouri scored single runs in the first, fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Second baseman Trevor Ezell was 3 for 4 and drove home two for the Redhawks.

Keaton Wright was 2 for 4 and the only SIUE player with more than a single hit. Brock Weimer was 1 for 3 with a double.

"Keaton swung the bat well all game," Stoecklin added. "Game in and game out he has taken good at-bats for us. Brock had a big hit with the double in the seventh inning," Stoecklin said.

The Cougars will look to avoid the sweep Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
