Box Score 2 USAFA, Colo. – Air Force swept a baseball doubleheader Saturday, defeating SIUE 8-0 and 11-0 at Falcon Field. Both games were seven-inning contests.
The start of game one was delayed by 2 ½ hours because of rain and lightning in the area.
The Cougars dropped to 9-33 overall. Air Force improved to 23-20 with the sweep.
In the opener, Air Force right-hander Griffin Jax (7-2) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. With one out in the inning. Logan Andersen singled back through the middle for the first hit of the day. Dustin Woodcock followed with a single to left for the only other hit in the game.
Jax went the distance, collecting his fourth complete game of the year. He allowed only two hits struck out four and walked two.
"(Griffin Jax) was pretty good," SIUE Coach Danny Jackson said. "I thought our approach was good. We went up there attacking. We just hit balls at guys. The approach was good, we just didn't have the results."
The Falcons scored six times on seven hits in the third inning against SIUE starter Jarrett Bednar (2-9). Bednar pitched just 2.1 innings, his shortest outing of the year.
"He was leaving the ball up," Jackson said. "They're a good hitting team. If you leave the ball up over the middle of the plate they'll make you pay and they did that today."
Air Force added two runs in the fourth inning for the 8-0 final.
In game two, Air Force left hander Jacob DeVries (5-5) also flirted with a no-hitter. DeVries tossed five no-hit innings. Again Andersen picked up the first hit. He led off the sixth inning with a single up the middle.
"He took two good at-bats," Jackson said. "His approach was good all day."
Keaton Wright added a single with one out in the inning for the only other SIUE hit in game two.
DeVries pitched six shutout innings. He struck out seven and walked three.
The Falcons got out to a quick start in the second game, scoring four times in the first inning against SIUE starter Ryan Fritz (0-2). Fritz allowed seven runs in just over an inning of work.
"We were alright after game one," Jackson said. "When we gave up that four-spot in the first inning (in game two) it burst our bubble a little."
The Cougars and Falcons will play the finale of the series Sunday. The game time has been moved up to 1 p.m. CT to avoid weather issues later in the afternoon.
"It's one of those days," Jackson said. "They pitched it better than us and they hit it better than us and that's why they won both games. We'll come out tomorrow ready to go."
