CHARLESTON, Ill. – Keith Meyer placed second overall and the SIUE men's cross country team took runner-up honors in its season-opening meet Friday at the EIU Walt Crawford Open.
Meyer ran the 8K course in 25 minutes, 9.82 seconds. He trailed SIU Carbondale's Josh Maier for the medalist position by 13 seconds.
Eastern Illinois won the meet with 33 followed by SIUE (43), SIU Carbondale (53) and Evansville (98).
Ben Scamihorn joined Meyer in the top 10 with an sixth-place finish in 25:59.81. Tyler Owens finished ninth (26:29.25) followed by Austin Woodard in 11th (26:48.66), Landon Skelly in 15th (27:36.42) and Anthony Holshouser in 17th (27:56.18).
"Overall, the team ran a great race," said SIUE Assistant Coach Kayla Brown. "They took home second place as a team with Keith leading the team. We had some exciting races, and we also learned of ways we can improve as well."
Next up for the Cougars is Sept. 9 when the team travels to Bloomington, Illinois, for the ISU Country Financial Invitational.
