Box Score RICHMOND, KY. – The No. 7 seeded SIUE women's soccer team advances to the quarterfinals of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament after defeating sixth seeded UT Martin 2-1 Friday at the EKU Soccer Field.
"I'm proud of the team today," Head Coach Derek Burton said. "They worked hard and intelligently against a good team."
The Cougars (7-9-2) struck first in the fifth minute when Peyton Roehnelt controlled a pass from Caroline Hoefert inside the box, took one dribble in and slotted it away past the keeper.
Just three minutes later, the Skyhawks levelled the score after a Nicole Collins goal off of a corner kick from Amy McGivern.
In the 24th minute, Hoefert scored her fourth goal of the season with a header that floated right over the keeper and into the back of the net. The goal was assisted by Avery Anderson who took a free kick from 25 yards out and placed the ball perfectly into the box for the headed goal from Hoefert.
In the first half, the Cougars outshot the Skyhawks 9-8.
The second half saw multiple shots from SIUE, including one from Andrea Frerker that hit off the crossbar in the 69th minute.
UT Martin (6-11-3) outshot SIUE 11-5 in the second half.
Juli Rossi recorded seven saves on the day, including five the second half. Hoefert took three shots. MacKenzie Litzsinger and Emily Grahl each had two shots.
"We need to recover and get ready to go back to work Sunday," Burton added.
The Cougars will face No. 3 seed Eastern Kentucky (9-4-4) in the quarterfinals Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.
