Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Austin Peay was pushed to the limit Saturday and edged SIUE volleyball 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-8 at the Vadalabene Center.
It was the second time this season that SIUE and Austin Peay has played a five-set match. That broke SIUE's string of nine straight victories and 10 consecutive wins at home.
SIUE fell to 19-5 overall and 9-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference after its second five-set match in as many days. Austin Peay now has a two-match lead on SIUE in the OVC standings with an 11-1 record in league play and a 23-4 mark overall.
"We waited and were reacting to them instead of just worrying about our side of the net," said SIUE Acting Head Coach Kendall Paulus.
Jackie Scott and Ashley Witt finished with 15 kills each on their Senior Day. Fellow senior Taylor Joens added 10 kills. As a team, SIUE hit .244.
"I was really happy to see how well we hit," said Paulus.
SIUE's defense also posted big numbers with 83 digs in the match. Senior libero Katie Shashack led the Cougars with 20 digs.
"There were several really good highlight plays," said Paulus.
Ashley Slay led the Governors with 20 kills as Austin Peay hit .295 as a team. Christina White and Jenna Panning added 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
SIUE has more match left in this five-match homestand. The Cougars face Eastern Illinois in a 6 p.m. match Wednesday.
