Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Penn used a pair of early goals to put a stop to SIUE men's soccer's three-game winning streak. The Quakers earned a 2-0 win Sunday night at Rhodes Field.
The Quakers improved to 1-4 with the win. SIUE fell to 3-4. It is the first time the Cougars have been shutout since falling to No. 22 Michigan State 1-0 to open the season.
Joe Swenson netted the eventual game-winner in the 15th minute when a shot deflected to him and he was able to put the rebound past SIUE goalkeeper Kyle Dal Santo.
Jake Kohlbrenner made it 2-0 before halftime with an unassisted strike from the top of the box in the 27th minute.
"Unfortunately we didn't come out prepared to compete," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said. "And we got punished."
The Cougars played an improved second half on both ends.
SIUE peppered the Penn goal with 17 shots in the second half including nine on goal, while limiting Penn to just three shots for the period. The Cougars put six shots on target in the game's final 10 minute, but Penn goalkeeper Etan Mabourakh turned them all away. He finished with nine saves for the game.
"We played a good second half," Sanchez said. "But (Mabourak) played a very good game. He was very good in the second half.
"We didn't compete for the full 90 minute and therefore didn't have the opportunity to get a result," Sanchez continued.
The Cougars remain on the road and next play Saturday night at Loyola.
