Box Score CHARLESTON, Ill. – SIUE women's soccer defeated Eastern Illinois 3-0. The Cougars start out Ohio Valley Conference play 2-0 for the second year in a row.
"As Sunday conference games go, today started out pretty typical," Head Coach Derek Burton said. "The game was a bit hectic and all about battling. In that sense, we did well with our level of focus and intention with how we played.
MacKenzie Litzsinger put the Cougars on the board first in 28th minute after Becca Jostes assisted on the play off of her deflected shot.
SIUE put up seven shots and were up 1-0 going into halftime.
In the 71st minute Emily Grahl slotted one away after beating two defenders to score unassisted.
Allison Wendt scored her first points of the season in the 87th minute after a cross in from Mariah Vollmer.
"Our decision making and ball retention grew better and better as the game progressed," Burton added. "The last 30 minutes proved that our quality depth is a very important factor."
The Cougars only allowed one shot in the second half. Juli Rossi finished with two saves.
"I'm delighted that the players saw the rewards this weekend of staying invested in our process," Burton said. It was a very good start to OVC play that we are now focused on continuing.
The Cougars are back in action on Friday, when they travel to Austin Peay for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
