Cougars Draw Level Against Redhawks

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's soccer and Southeast Missouri played to a 1-1 draw Sunday.

The Cougars are now 5-7-1 (4-3-1 Ohio Valley Conference) and SEMO moves to 4-7-3 (2-3-3 OVC). This was SIUE's first draw of the season.

"They had chances, but we did as well where we could of put the game away," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "We could have done better to keep their late goal from happening, but I cannot fault our effort today."

Play was a bit slow in the first half, only six shots combined from both teams.

In the 38th minute, SEMO's Esmie Gonzales had a breakaway shot for the Redhawks, but SIUE goalkeeper Jensen Schoch made a spectacular save to keep the score 0-0 going into halftime.

The pace of play picked up tremendously in the second half.

The Cougars scored right out of halftime in the 46th minute. SIUE's Becca Jostes took a corner kick, which she placed perfectly to Andrea Frerker inside the box. Frerker then ripped a low driven far post shot that beat SEMO goalkeeper Bailey Redden.

In the 62nd minute, SIUE's Courtney Benning placed a shot that beat Redden, but ended up hitting the far post.

The Redhawks had a corner kick in the 64th minute that was placed perfectly into Jermima Job inside the box, her chipped shot was saved by Schoch.

SEMO tied things up late in regulation with an 89th minute goal. Jermima crossed in the ball from the wing, placing it right to Morgan McCourt for the score.

In the first overtime, SIUE's Emma Ehrsam curled in a shot from around 25 yards out that just missed the crossbar by a couple feet.

"I was happy with the way we rebounded from the late goal," added Burton. "Their goal came against the run of play, and hats off to them for the great finish."

SEMO outshot the Cougars in full-time 17-16. Benning led the Cougars in shots with three. Schoch recorded four saves on the day.

"Finishing is the hardest thing to do in the game," Burton added. "We are always working on it in different ways. It's a work in progress and we will keep at it."

The Cougars will close out the regular season on the road against Tennessee Tech Oct. 19 and Jacksonville State Oct. 21.
