Cougars Fall to Golden Eagles on the Road

Box Score

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech took advantage of a pair of set pieces Friday night to down SIUE 2-0 in women's soccer at Tech Soccer Field.

"We had a lot of dangerous opportunities," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "But (Tennessee Tech) connected on two set pieces."

SIUE fell to 4-4-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play and remains in third place with one regular season game remaining. The Cougars are 5-8-1 overall.

"We got some help some help from other games," Burton said. "We are fortunate in that regard."

Tennessee Tech improved to 7-7-2 overall and 3-4-2 in OVC play. The Golden Eagles are tied for seventh.

Chloe Smith opened the scoring in the 25th minute. After a free kick into the box wasn't cleared, Nora Vicsek chipped the ball to Smith who buried it past SIUE goalkeeper Jensen Schoch who was diving to her left.

TTU's first goal came just five minutes after SIUE had a goal disallowed. Megan Danielson served a ball in near the top of the 18-yard box. Andrea Frerker got her head on it and knocked it over TTU goalkeeper Kari Naerdemann and into the goal before being ruled offside.

"We created plenty of good chances," Burton said. "We got the ball into a couple of good areas."

Kendall Powell scored her seventh goal of the year in the 79th minute. Powell got her head on a corner kick from Rachel Blow to push the Golden Eagles' lead to 2-0.

TTU edged SIUE in total shots 13-12. The Golden Eagles had seven shots on goal to SIUE's five. Becca Jostes paced the Cougars with four shots and two shots on goal. Both goalkeepers made five saves in the game.

SIUE will finish the regular season Sunday at Jacksonville State. Should the Cougars finish the regular season in third or fourth place, they would receive a first round bye and host a quarterfinal game in the OVC Championship next weekend.

"It's all to play for Sunday," Burton said. "It's our most important game. I am super-confident in this group's ability to bounce back."
