Cougars Pitch Past Golden Eagles for Series Win

TULSA, Okla. – Three Cougar pitchers combined to hold Oral Roberts to a run on six hits Sunday and SIUE baseball won its first series of the year with a 2-1 win in the finale.

The Cougars are now 4-5. Oral Roberts dipped to 6-3.

"This is a great series win for us at this point," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "I'm really happy with the way we played."

With the game tied 1-1 in the ninth inning, the Cougars took advantage of a Golden Eagle miscue. Jared McCunn reached on a fielding error to start the inning, and then advanced to second on a groundout. A Jackson Layton base hit scored McCunn to give SIUE the 2-1 lead.

ORU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI-double by Spencer Henson.

Brock Weimer tied the game with an RBI-hit in the sixth inning. Bret Fehr scored on the play after reaching initially on a fielder's choice.

Kenny Serwa started the game for the Cougars and tossed 4.2 innings. He allowed the run on four hits. He walked here and struck out four.

"Kenny gave us another good start," Lyons said.

Collin Baumgartner came on in the fifth with two runners on and one out. He pitched out of the fifth inning and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and struck out two.

"Collin came into a tough situation," Lyons said. "Every time we have given him the ball he has answered the bell."

Mason McReaken pitched the final two innings to pick up his second win of the year. He struck out three and walked one.

"Mason was really sharp for two innings," Lyons added.  

Layton had two hits for the Cougars, who finished with seven hits.

"(Oral Roberts) pitched extremely well all weekend," Lyons said. "Our guys kept grinding and we got some hits at key times today."

SIUE finishes its season-opening 10-game road trip with a 2 p.m. game at Wichita State Tuesday. The Cougars open the home season Wednesday with a 3 p.m. game against Saint Louis.
