Morehead State Comes-from-Behind for Series Win

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE baseball scored six times on 12 hits Saturday, but it wasn't enough to get past Morehead State. The Eagles scored a come-from-behind 10-6 win over the Cougars to win the Ohio Valley Conference series.

The Cougars fell to 7-25 overall and 3-14 in OVC play. Morehead State improved to 22-14 and 10-4.

"We did a better job offensively today," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "We couldn't get those shut down innings after we put runs on the board."

The Cougars took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Brock Weimer led off the inning with a long home run to center. Garrett Carmichael added an RBI and then scored later in the inning on an errant throw.

The Eagles got a home run from catcher Hunter Fain in the third inning and then took the lead for good with four two-out runs in the fifth inning to go up 5-3. Connor Pauly, Tyler Nieman and Fain each had RBI hits in the inning.

Kenny Serwa (2-3) worked into the fifth and allowed seven runs in the loss. He struck out two.

"I maybe went a little too long with guys on the mound," Lyons said. "He lost command a little bit of the fastball."

Morehead State led 8-3 when the Cougars got two runs back in the seventh. Aaron Goecks drove home a run with a sacrifice fly and Jared McCunn added an RBI-single. The Cougars put two runners on to start the eighth inning, before a double play and a ground out ended the threat.

"We couldn't get the big hit in the eighth," Lyons said. "We had first and second and nobody out we just couldn't convert."

Morehead State's defense turned three double plays during the game.

The Eagles pushed the lead back to five in the top of the ninth against reliever Brock Fulkerson. Pauly drove home two with a one-out single.

Fulkerson worked 4 1/3 innings in relief. He allowed four runs. He struck out five.

"Fulkerson did a nice job for the most part coming out of the bullpen," Lyons said. "He is the one I really probably hung with a little too long."

SIUE managed a run in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out error for the final margin.

Carmichael and Eric Giltz each had three hits for SIUE. Gikltz collected two doubles and scored two runs. Weimer finished 2 for 4.

Pauly was 2 for 3 for Morehead State with three RBIs.

The Cougars will look to avoid the sweep Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Lefty David Llorens will get the start for SIUE.
