Gamecocks Win Series with Friday Win

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Jacksonville State grabbed a 7-5 decision Friday to secure a series win over SIUE baseball at Simmons Complex.

The game started an hour late due to weather and included a 16-minute rain delay in the fourth inning.

The Cougars' season finale is set for Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. SIUE will honor eight seniors prior to the game.

SIUE (15-36 overall, 6-23 in the Ohio Valley Conference) took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by Garrett Carmichael.

The Gamecocks capitalized on an SIUE error in the third to tie the score before six times in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-1 advantage and chase starter Kenny Serwa.

JSU's Isaac Alexander drove home two with a triple and Andrew Naismith added an RBI in the fifth inning. Nic Gaddis and Trent Simpson each collected RBIs in a three-run sixth inning.

Serwa (3-7) worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs, three of which were earned, on 14 hits. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.

"(JSU) did a tremendous job against Kenny," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "They really stayed on the breaking ball. They had a couple of big innings with some clutch hits in those spots."

SIUE relievers Ryan Byrd, Devin Colley and Chris Robinson combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Cougars loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh. Brock Weimer singled to drive in a run, Aaron Goecks walked to force in a run, Carmichael hit a sacrifice fly to center and Aaron Jackson singled to trim the lead to 7-5, but that's as close as SIUE would get.

"The guys continued to play hard even after we fell behind early," Lyons added. "Our guys strung a couple of hits together and a couple of walks."

Gamecocks' starter Derrick Adams improved to 5-2 with the win. He allowed just a run over five innings.

"(Adams) did a nice job anytime he got into trouble," Lyons said. "We had put up some good at-bats and didn't have a lot to show for it."

SIUE outhit Jacksonville State 12-11. Jordan Ross, Eric Giltz, Weimer and Goecks all had two hits.
