Cougars Defeat Racers in OT Thriller

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE women's soccer team wins in walk-off fashion for the second straight game after beating Ohio Valley Conference leaders Murray State 2-1 in overtime. Angel Ikeda was the Hero for the Cougars this weekend, scoring the game-winning goals Sunday and Friday against Austin Peay.

The Cougars improve to 4-5 (3-1 OVC) and the Racers fall to 6-2-1 (2-1 OVC). SIUE defeated Austin Peay in overtime 2-1 Friday.

"The results this weekend went our way," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "We gave everything this weekend, and got the results we wanted."

Murray State began the scoring in the third minute with a goal from Symone Cooper. Miyah Watford crossed the ball in for the Racers and Cooper headed home the try.

The second half is where the Cougars picked up their offensive and defensive pressure, dominating possession throughout the second half.

In the 67th minute, SIUE's Tamia Cash brought the ball up from her left-back position. She made a few defenders miss and put in a good shot, which Murray State goalkeeper Alex Stelgerwald saved.

The Cougars pulled things level in the 69th minute with a Becca Jostes goal, her second of the season.  Allison Wendt put through a ball to Jostes, which she slotted away with a nice far post shot.

In the 84th minute, Jostes drove the ball into the Racers penalty box. She was tripped up by a defender after dribbling past her, resulting in a penalty kick. Jostes missed the PK wide left.

Murray State picked up their offensive urgency late in the second half, but the SIUE defenders held strong, forcing overtime.

Two minutes into OT, SIUE's Wendt had a great throw into the box, which touched Courtney Benning before falling to Ikeda for the game winner.

"Murray State has really good players, they're very pacey and are hard to defend one-on-one," added Burton. "We did a good job of trying to deny them the ball and we had a great team effort overall."

SIUE outshot Murray State 21-9. Jostes and Kayla Klipsch each had four shots, leading the Cougars. SIUE goalkeeper Jensen Schoch recorded six saves.

Friday, the Cougars will face UT Martin in a 7 p.m. kickoff at Korte Stadium.
