Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — The SIUE women's soccer team wrapped up homecoming week with a 6-1 win over Jacksonville State, for their first OVC win of the season.
"The trend continues, we have been creating a lot of opportunities for players to score and today just happened to be the day that they started to go in," commented Head Women's Soccer Coach Derek Burton. "Everyone on the bench is a beneficiary, we don't rely on one person and I know we have talent throughout the depth of our bench."
The Cougars started the game off strong by scoring the first goal of the game at the 5-minute mark with a goal from MacKenzie Litzsinger and an assist from Becca Jostes. The team responded again at the 10-minute mark with a goal from Courtney Benning.
The Cougars were able to score another goal right before the half at minute 37 with a goal from Megan Keeven and an assist from Lily Schnieders. The team would enter the second half with a 3-0 lead.
The team kept the momentum going in the second half, scoring another goal five minutes into the second half. Angel Ikeda scored a goal with an assist from Jostes, her second on the day.
The fifth goal for the Cougars came at minute 61 from Schnieders with an assist from Emma Dutko.
The team had a 5-0 shutout going until minute 80 struck, where the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State found the top right corner to score their first goal.
With six minutes remaining in regulation, Ashley Guardado found the back of the net with an assist from Andrea Frerker.
The Cougars outshot the Gamecocks on the day 21-11.
In goal for the team, Jensen Schoch picked up the win and recorded six saves on the afternoon.
"Any win can give a team confidence for upcoming games, but getting the first conference victory is huge," Burton added. "With more conference play ahead, we look to continue to build on top of it."
The Cougars will continue conference play this coming week as they travel to Southeast Missouri State on Thursday, to take on the Redhawks with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m.
