Volleyball Drops Road Contest at Morehead State

MOREHEAD, Ky.  -  A rematch of Friday's five-set thriller went the way of the hosts on Saturday morning, as Morehead State claimed a straight-set win over SIUE volleyball (19-25, 23-25, 21-25).

The Cougars started off slow, hitting under .100 in the first set and allowing the Eagles to go for a match-high .293 en route to a 25-19 opening frame victory. The second set saw the Cougars and Eagles trade points, with neither squad able to claim the definitive edge until the set's final moments. Morehead State pulled away late to earn a two-point second set win. SIUE found plenty of attacking success in the third set, hitting for their highest set hitting percentage of the match and holding the hosts to a sub-.200 clip; however, the Cougars' attacking prowess was not enough to overcome MSU's formidable defensive efforts and handed the Eagles the match win.

SIUE was led offensively by Savannah Christian and Julia Treichel, who registered seven kills each in the contest. Treichel also notched eight kills, falling just short of notching her second consecutive double-double. Alyse Drifka and true freshman Grace Beekman dished 12 and 10 assists, respectively, to lead the Red & White in that department. Nicole Kijowski led the Cougars with 18 digs, while Grace Hurst followed close behind with 12 digs to her credit.

The Cougars, who fall to 5-20 overall and 2-12 in OVC play, will stay on the road next weekend when they travel to Nashville for a two-match series at Tennessee State.
