Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State scored eight unanswered runs Friday to come from behind to win 10-4 in game one of a three-game weekend series.
SIUE dropped to 0-3 with the loss. Wichita State improved to 1-2.
SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons admitted that SIUE didn't play a clean game.
"We didn't play a very sound baseball game," he said. "We gave up nine walks and we made a couple of costly errors. It is tough to overcome when you're putting guys on base."
The Shockers got on the board with a walk and a two-run homer by third baseman Paxton Wallace in the third inning to lead 2-0.
The Cougars made their push in the fifth inning against WSU starter Liam Eddy. The Cougars used a leadoff walk and four hits to score four times and take a 4-2 lead.
Ole Arntson, Steven Pattan, Brett Johnson and Josh Ohl each picked up RBIs in the inning.
"He may have been getting tired," Lyons said of the Wichita State starter. "But we took advantage of a leadoff walk and we were able to capitalize with a big inning."
Wichita tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning and went back on top with two in the sixth to lead 6-4. Wallace drove in both runs in the sixth with a two-run single.
"Unfortunately, we gave that lead right back," Lyons said.
The Shockers scored four times in the seventh inning, with Wallace homering for the second time in the game, this time a three-run shot.
Wallace finished with three hits, including the two homers and seven RBIs.
David Llorens (0-1) and Alec Kubik each surrendered four runs in relief for the Cougars. Tyler Bastunas started for SIUE and gave up two runs, on the home run, over 2.1 innings.
"Aside from the home run, Tyler did great," Lyons said.
SIUE scattered five hits among five different players.
"We can be better offensively than we have the first three games, but I saw some things in our approach that were positive," Lyons said "We limited our strikeouts better than we did Tuesday."
The Cougars and Shockers will play the second game of the three-game series Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
