Box Score 2 EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Southeast Missouri swept a doubleheader from SIUE Saturday and won the Ohio Valley Conference baseball series from the Cougars. The Redhawks won the opener 6-3 in 10 innings and then took the nightcap 6-4.
SIUE is now 6-6 overall and 1-2 on OVC play. Southeast Missouri improved to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in the OVC.
SIUE trailed 2-1 in game one Saturday but scored a run on Brady Bunten's RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score but left two runners on when the innings ended. SEMO came back with three runs on three hits and a walk in the 10th against SIUE reliever Rob Parks (0-1).
SIUE scored twice in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead in the game. John Stallcup was walked with the bases loaded and Richie Well added an RBI on a sacrifice fly, but the Cougars left the bases loaded when the inning ended. SIUE stranded 13 runners on base including seven in scoring position.
"We left a lot of runners on base in that game," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "Obviously it nipped us in the butt."
Jake Bockenstedt started the game but left in the fourth inning with an apparent injury. Noah Matheny took over and threw 4 2/3 innings allowing a run on three hits.
"Noah had to come in cold," Lyons said. "He did a great job. He settled in and got us to the later innings of the game and gave us a chance to win. We had that opportunity we just had a couple of miscues.
Raul Elguezabal was 3-5 with a run scored in the opener. Connor Kiffer was 2-4. Ole Arntson was 2-5. Well was 1-2 with the RBI.
In game two, Southeast Missouri jumped on SIUE starter Kaid Karnes, scoring four times on four hits in the first inning.
SIUE scored a run in the first on a Kiffer RBI-double and another in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Elguezabal and trailed 5-2. The Cougars scored twice in the seventh inning to trim the lead to 5-4. Josh Ohl reached on an error but drove home a run and Brady Bunten added an RBI-hit in the inning.
Tyler Wilber's one-out home run in the eighth stretched the SEMO lead to 6-4.
"They took advantage today," Lyons said of Southeast Missouri. "They did a good job of getting their runs in when they had their opportunities."
Karnes (0-2) took the loss in the second game, allowing five runs over three innings. Brant Glidewell followed Karnes into the game and worked 4 1/3 perfect innings before surrendering the home run to Wilber. Glidewell allowed only the run in five innings. He struck out five.
"Brant did a tremendous job in game two," He really settled the score. He gave us the opportunity to get back into it, which we did, but we just came up short."
SIUE outhit Southeast Missouri in both games, 13-7 in game one and 11-8 in game two.
Ohl was 2-4 with the RBI and two runs scored. He reached base three times in the game. Kiffer was 2-5 with the RBI. Well was 3-4 with a run.
"I am proud of the way our guys fight and the way they've competed," Lyons said. "We have to make sure we have a good pitch to hit and come through in those situations."
SIUE wraps up its season-long eight-game home stand with a Tuesday game against Western Illinois. First pitch is 4 p.m.
