Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE women's soccer took down Morehead State, 1-0, on Friday night to remain atop the table in the Ohio Valley Conference and extend their win streak to five.
"Not our best performance overall," said SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton. "Just not clicking and we were a bit hesitant. But a good portion of the reason was Morehead State. They were up for it and they were ready to play. The second half was much more effective in terms of the way we wanted to play and it led to a decent amount of chances, and we were able to get one. Really composed pass and finish."
After a scoreless opening half, the Cougars kicked off the second half determined to put the ball in the back of the net. That's exactly what happened in the 73rd minute, as Ashlin West took a pass from Kayla Klipsch and netted her second goal of the season. That would be the deciding goal of the match, as goalkeeper Taylor Spiller and the SIUE backline allowed just six total shots to keep a third consecutive clean sheet.
"Defensively, we did well along the back line and our midfield put in a lot of work tonight," added Burton. "Taylor was solid in handling the dangerous restarts in the box. Always nice to keep the other team off the board when we weren't very fluid in the attack."
The Cougars, who improve to 5-0-0, will head to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, for a Tuesday afternoon fixture against Southeast Missouri - the only other undefeated team in the Ohio Valley Conference. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live stats will be available at SIUEStats.com.
