Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE women's soccer was taken down for the first time in the Spring 2021 season, falling on Friday night to Murray State, 2-1.
"We struggled to get ahold of the ball in the first half and gave it away too often," said SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton following the match. "But we came out in the second half and played the way we wanted. Unfortunately, a couple lapses in judgment led to a goal against the run of play. That's the game unfortunately."
Murray State opened up the scoring in the 26th minute, and held that lead into halftime. The Cougars came out of the locker room and pulled even in the second half after Lily Schnieders neatly slotted a penalty kick into the bottom right corner of the net in the 54th minute. However, the tie would hold for just under 20 minutes, as a defensive error gave Murray State's Chloe Barnthouse a clear shot on goal to net the game-winner.
The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday, travelling to Cookeville, Tennessee, to take on Tennessee Tech. First kick is scheduled for 4 p.m.
"For us moving forward, we have two challenges in our next game," added Burton. "A good Tennessee Tech team and ourselves. So we will focus on emotionally recovering first and get ready to put out our best foot forward Tuesday."
