RICHMOND, Ky.  -  Sarah Armendariz and Sydney Hummert shattered career highs in assists and kills, respectively, as SIUE knocked off Eastern Kentucky in five sets to sweep the season series with the Colonels.

After convincingly taking the opening set, 25-10, and taking the second set, 25-22, EKU stormed back to draw even with victories in the third and fourth sets. The match would come down to a deciding fifth set, which the Cougars would narrowly take, 15-12.

"We were trying to combat fatigue going into the fifth set," said SIUE Head Coach Kendall Paulus following the match. "Offensively, we were doing well, so we knew we needed to stay disciplined on defense to remain confident. Our mindset was confident, so we needed our actions to follow."

The Cougars were led by Hummert, who recorded 13 digs and notched a career-high 21 kills to hit for a .450 clip, and Armendariz, who dished a career-best 62 assists on the day. Rachel McDonald added 18 digs and 15 kills to earn her first double-double of the season, Hope Everett contributed 14 kills of her own, and Annie Ellis registered 11 kills. In addition to breaking her own career high, Armendariz's 62-assist perfornance was good for second-most by a Cougar in the program's Division I era.

SIUE will return to the friendly confines of First Community Arena on Sunday, as UT Martin makes the trip to Edwardsville for a Senior Day showdown.
