Late Goal Helps Women's Soccer to Draw against Belmont

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.  -  Maria Haro netted a goal in the 87th minute and held Belmont scoreless for more than 70 minutes, as SIUE women's soccer split the points against Belmont on Friday night.

"Belmont came out very strong and with a bit more than us," said SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton. "We didn't match at every position like we needed that said we still had quality chances."

Belmont struck first, as Julie Garst scored in the 38th minute to put the Bruins up 1-0. The visitors would hold that lead up until the final moments of regulation, as Haro took a pass from Lily Schnieders to net her first goal of the season with just over 120 seconds before the final whistle. The Cougars would record a season-high 26 shots, while the SIUE backline held Belmont to just six total shots.

"In the second half, we really took ahold of the way the game was played and we were very unlucky to not score more than one," said Burton. "I was proud of the second half performance."

The Cougars will close out the regular season on Tuesday night, travelling to Jacksonville State to face the 3-4-1 Gamecocks. SIUE will then follow with the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, with seeding and location to be determined.

"We will get another test Tuesday on the road and after a day off, start gearing for a tough opponent," added Burton. "We want to finish the regular season on a positive note."
