DES MOINES, Iowa - SIUE women's soccer fell in their first of two matches in the Hawkeye State, dropping a 1-0 decision at Drake on Friday night.
The Cougars dominated on both sides of the ball through the majority of the contest, as the stingy Cougar defense allowed the hosts to attempt just one shot on goal through the opening 45 minutes. The SIUEÂ forwards also showed their prowess, as
Andrea Frerker led all players with four total shots, three of which were on target. In total, SIUE posted 13 total shots and five shots on goal, more than doubling Drake's six total shots and one shot on goal.
"I could not be more pleased with the team tonight," said SIUE Head Coach
Derek Burton following the match. "We gave them a plan, they executed it at an extremely high level. As far as overall performance, it was fantastic."
However, it would be the Bulldogs' lone shot on goal that would sail past
Taylor Spiller and send the Cougars out with a loss. The Drake goal was scored in the 84th minute, coming off a converted set piece.
"Not the first time and not the last time a match result doesn't truly reflect our efforts unfortunately," added Burton. "That, of course, is frustrated. As I told the team, I promise if we play like this, we will be getting the results we want frequently."
SIUE (1-2-0) will close out their Iowa road trip on Sunday afternoon, when the Cougars make the short trip north to Ames, Iowa, for a date with Iowa State. The match will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
