News & Notes

WHERE WE'RE AT: SIUE women's soccer enters Thursday's non-conference contest at 1-3 and are looking to break a two-match losing streak.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS SHOWDOWN: The Cougars welcome our sister university from Carbondale to Korte Stadium in a match between the only Division I universities in the Southern Illinois region. SIUE and SIU Carbondale have faced off just once before, when the Cougars travelled to Carbondale and emerged with a 2-0 win on Oct. 18, 2019. This will mark the first time both squads have played each other in Edwardsville.

SCOUTING THE SALUKIS: SIUC comes to Edwardsville with a 0-4-1 record, most recently dropping a pair of fixtures last week in Nashville. The Salukis have been outscored 14-2 this season, with their two goals coming in a 3-2 loss to Kansas City. SIUC is in their third season as a program, boasting an all-time record of 5-20-6 - the Salukis have defeated one full Division I opponent in their program's history (Aug. 30, 2019 vs. Belmont).

LAST TIME OUT: SIUE women's soccer made a trip to the Hawkeye State for a weekend series against two of the state's highest-profile programs. The Cougars kicked off the trip on Sep. 3, where an 87th minute strike gave the host Drake Bulldogs a heartbreaking 1-0 victory. Less than 48 hours later, the Red & White travelled north to Ames, Iowa, for a date with Big 12 Conference foe Iowa State. Much like on Friday, a late goal doomed SIUE, as the Cyclones netted the match's lone goal in the 76th minute to claim a 1-0 win.

LOCAL FLAIR: Coach Burton has recruited and retained talented student-athletes from throughout the Metro East and Greater St. Louis regions. Of the 33 student-athletes on this season's roster, 21 hail from Greater St. Louis - this includes five who came to SIUE from a county in the Metro East region.

RETURNERS: The Cougars return all but two starters from last season's OVC champion squad, and bring back all three goalkeepers from Spring 2021. Highlighting the returning Cougars are OVC Forward of the Year MacKenzie Litzsinger, All-OVC and United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Second Team selection Lily Schnieders, and OVC All-Newcomer selection Matea Diekema.

NEW FACES: The Red & White welcome eight newcomers to the program, six of whom hail from the Greater St. Louis area. Included in this class are sisters Ashlyn and Kaitlyn Nichols (O'Fallon, Mo.), who join Matea and Myah Diekema as the only known pair of sisters playing in the same Division I soccer program.
