• This is the first home opener to start a season for the Cougars since 2016 when the team bested Chicago State 6-1 on Aug. 19, 2015.
• The Cougars are 1-1-1 in the last three home openers. SIUE lost 3-0 at Loyola Chicago to start the 2021 season.
• This is the third time SIUE and Indiana State have started a season against each other. SIUE defeated Indiana State 3-0 (8/24/2008). Indiana State downed SIUE 2-0 (8/17/2012). Both previous openers against Indiana State were in Terre Haute, Indiana.
• SIUE is coming off back-to-back seasons of appearances in the NCAA Championships as well as Ohio Valley Conference Championship titles.
• Last season, SIUE won the OVC postseason tournament with a 1-0 overtime road victory at UT Martin. The Cougars met No. 3 Notre Dame in round one of NCAA Championships, dropping a 4-0 decision to the Fighting Irish.
• Two seasons ago, the Cougars won the OVC Tournament in an abbreviated spring season (due to COVID), besting Southeast Missouri 2-1 in the title game. No. 12-ranked Virginia defeated SIUE 3-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Championships.
• The Cougars have now made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament during the NCAA Division I era (2014, 2016, 2020 and 2021).
• SIUE had four first team All-OVC performers last season, including 2022 returners Lily Schnieders and Maria Haro.
• Schnieders, a second team All-Region pick during the 2020 season (played in spring 2021), is the top returning scorer from last season with seven goals and five assists for 19 points. Three of her goals were game-winning goals.
• Haro is the second among returning scorers with seven goals and four assists.
• Head Coach Derek Burton has coached every SIUE match played in the Division I era, joining SIUE before the 2008 season. Among his 112 career victories, he has accumulated five double-digit win seasons, including last season's 11-victory campaign.
