Jaguars Top Cougars 3-2

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – In what was a back-and-forth contest, IUPUI upended SIUE women's soccer Sunday 3-2 at Korte Stadium.

Maya Lacognato had two goals for IUPUI, now 2-0, including the game winner at 60:48 as she stole a pass and scored unassisted.

"In and around the box defending is something that we have to take a look at," said SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton. "It really comes down to the small details. It's a little bit of a learning curve, especially for some of our younger players."

The Cougars, now 1-1, outshot the Jaguars 14-12 and capitalized on a breakaway at midfield for the only score of the first half. Sidney Christopher stole the ball at midfield, rushed toward IUPUI goalkeeper Ashton Kudlo and passed it in the box to Savannah DeFini for a tap-in goal.

IUPUI countered with Lacognato's first goal of the game at 53:06.

It took less than 90 seconds for SIUE to regain the lead. After the Cougars were tackled in the box, Lily Schnieders scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick at 54:37.

IUPUI quickly tied the game on a 25-yard shot from Emma Frey at 55:24.

"On the positive side, we created a lot of really good quality chances," said Burton. "I think those are going to continue to happen."

Kudlo picked up the win in goal for IUPUI with seven saves. Taylor Spiller had four saves in goal for the Cougars.

"It's just an extension of what we have been saying all preseason," noted Burton. "Let's get better for each time out whether it's practice or a game."

SIUE heads to Evanston, Illinois, for its first road contest of the regular season, visiting Northwestern Thursday in a 4:30 p.m. contest.
