GREEN BAY, Wis.- The SIUE volleyball team fell to Green Bay in four sets 18-25, 25-23, 17-25, 16-25. Following the loss, the Cougars drop to 5-6 on the year, while the Phoenix improve to 8-5.
Set 1: With the first frame tied early at four, the Phoenix used an 8-0 run to take the lead and never looked back. With Green Bay leading 14-7 SIUE used a 6-1 run close the gap within two points, but Green Bay answered with three straight points. The Phoenix went on to take the opening set, 25-18.
Set 2: Down 11-7 in the second, the Cougars went on an 8-2 run to take a one-point lead over the Phoenix. Green Bay would reclaim a 17-15 advantage, but a kill from Ainsley Ranstead and three straight attack errors by the Phoenix allowed the Cougars to take a two-point lead at 19-17. Tied at 22 apiece, back-to-back kills from Monica LaFleur and Sydney Hummert gave SIUE a two-point advantage. SIUE would take the second set, 25-23.
Set 3: Green Bay flipped the momentum early in the third as the Phoenix took advantage of attack errors to go up 9-3. Trailing 20-10, SIUE used a 6-1 run to put the set within five points. However, Green Bay would finish the third frame on a 4-1 run to take a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Set 4: The Cougars and Phoenix traded points early to tie the set at 10 points, but Green Bay rallied on a 12-2 run to take a 10-point lead. The Phoenix went on to win the fourth set 25-16 and the match.
Sydney Hummert led the Cougars with 12 kills while adding 13 digs. Priscilla Jones and Ainsley Ranstead also added kills for SIUE, with nine and eight respectively. In addition to nine kills, Jones recorded three blocks and two aces. Caroline Waite dished out 30 assists and added two aces of her own. On defense, Nicole Kijowski recorded a team-high 17 digs.
All-Tournament Team: Sydney Hummert was named to the All-Tournament Team for her performance over the weekend at the Green Bay Invitational. Hummert finished with 43 kills on 105 attacks with 11 errors, good for a .305 hitting percentage. Hummert averaged a team-high 3.58 kills per set and recorded 33 digs (2.75 DPS) over the three games.
