MOREHEAD, Ken. – SIUE Volleyball battled Morehead State to five sets but would eventually fall in the decider as the Eagles downed the Cougars 3-2 on Friday afternoon at Johnson Arena. SIUE took the opening frame before using a .409 attack percentage in the fourth set to push the match to the fifth. The set scores were: 25-17, 26-28, 15-25, 25-12, and 13-15.
SIUE falls to 12-13 on the season and 6-8 against Ohio Valley Conference opponents. Morehead State improves to 16-11 and 9-6.
The Cougars used a .286 in the opening frame while holding MSU to a .048 clip for an early 1-0 advantage. Morehead State regrouped, taking back-to-back sets in the second and third before the Cougars overwhelmed the Eagles 25-12 to push the fifth frame. With SIUE leading 9-4 in the final frame, MSU used a 7-2 run to knot the match at 11. The Cougars grabbed the next two points before the Eagles rattled off the following four to take the match
Defensively, SIUE set a season high mark in digs with 92. The Cougars won the kill battle, 57-53 while concluding the match with a .140 attack percentage.
Inside the Numbers:
- Sydney Hummert led the Cougars' attack with a season-high 18 kills on 29 swings for a .286 clip. She added 16 digs for her 12th double-double of the season. She has picked up a double-double in eight of SIUE's last 10 matches. The junior also led SIUE with three service aces.
- Jenna Taphorn recorded a career-high 12 kills on 28 attempts. She also contributed a pair of blocks.
- At the net, Chelsey Abel and Hummert led SIUE with five blocks apiece. Priscilla Jones added four. SIUE as a team finished the match with 11 total blocks.
- The setting duo of Alyse Drifka (23) and Corinna Jones (18) combined for 41 of SIUE's 52 assists. Both collected 11 digs, good for double-doubles.
- Five student-athletes recorded double-digit digs, led by Gabi Andrade's career-high 28. Paige Montgomery's 12 digs were also good for a career best mark.
