EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE women's tennis poured on six straight sets victories in singles and collected a 6-1 victory over IUPUI at the Edwardsville Y Meyer Center.
"This is a win that we can really focus in on as a learning experience," said SIUE Head Coach
Adam Albertsen. "We didn't play well enough to get the point in doubles and lacked some of the energy and focus we have had in previous matches. We know this can be a strength and will work to clean it up."
Margaux Guibal Britt and
Amelia Gorman were victorious in their No. 2 doubles match 6-3 over IUPUI's Emma Dell and Grace Lampman, but the Cougars were able to pull out wins in their other two doubles matches.
The doubles point came down to No. 3 doubles where
Jaiden McKee and
Fabiola Perez. The Cougars had a chance to even the game score but lost the deuce point and the match 6-4. It Perez's first action of the spring season.
"Bouncing back in singles was extremely impressive," said Albertsen. "We had great points and tough games without dropping a set. I love how the entire team stepped up and did their part."
Guibal Britt and Gorman each stepped up to give the Cougars the team scoring lead. Guibal Britt bested Samantha Hayward 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Gorman defeated Lampman 6-2, 6-3.
Jordan Schifano collected a win at No. 3 singles while
Caitlyn Sporing provided the clinching victory at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sarah Lounsbury.
Jill Lambrechts and and
Melissa Vizcardo added singles wins at No. 1 and No. 6 to complete the singles sweep.
"It's always more fun to learn from a win," said Albertsen, "This team will continue to improve and great ready for two matches on the road next weekend."
Next up for the Cougars is a pair of matches in Cedar Falls, Iowa. SIUE faces St. Thomas (Minn.) in a neutral site match Saturday. SIUE faces Northern Iowa in a Sunday dual meet.
