EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -
Logan Smith's bases-loaded single to left center field proved the difference in game two Saturday as the SIUE baseball team walked off a victory over Morehead State at Simmons Complex.
The Cougars, 25-25 overall and 8-13 in the Ohio Valley Conference, won game two 7-6 after dropping game one 3-2. The first game was delayed midway through the contest by 2 hours, 39 minutes due to thunderstorms.Â
"With
Logan Smith to get the walkoff, it has to be a great feeling," said SIUE Head Coach
Sean Lyons. "I know the guys are excited about getting the win today and cap off a long day."
With the game tied 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth,
Avery Owusu-Asiedu drew a one-out walk from the sixth Morehead State pitcher of the game John Baake. Owusu-Asiedu stole second just before
Kyle Ratliff drew another walk.
Ole Arntson then hit the ball to the right side. Morehead State first baseman Jackson Feltner fielded the ball and threw to second, drawing shortstop Colton Becker off the second base bag. Everyone was safe on the play, which led to Smith drilling a single to the gap.
"To have the guys bounce back, fall behind in the middle innings and then keep grinding back to get a much-needed win was great," said Lyons.
Ian Benner picked up the win in game two with two scoreless innings of relief. It was Benner's first win of the season.
"
Hayden Cooper and
Ian Benner did a nice job for us out of the bullpen. They gave us an opportunity at the end," said Lyons.
"We had some big hits from Brady (Bunten) and Avery," said Lyons.
Ethan Willoughby, a freshman, had a couple of solid barrels."
Bunten hit his 34th career home run in the first inning of game two. He is now one shy to tying the career record set by Brock Weimer (2016-19). Owusu-Asiedu hit a key two-run homer in the sixth that cut the Morehead State lead to 5-4 at the time.
"The guys really battled to pull out the win," said Lyons. "Things weren't going our way today. We had too many opportunities and didn't score in game one. To lose a one-run game was tough."
Brennan Orf, who had a solo home run in game one, extended his reached base streak to 36 games through Saturday's doubleheader.
The Cougars close out the regular season next weekend with a three-game OVC series at Lindenwood.
