ST. CHARLES, Mo. – SIUE baseball concluded its regular season Saturday with an 11-5 loss at Lindenwood. The Lions won two of three in the final series.
SIUE finishes the regular season at 26-27 overall and 9-15 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Lindenwood finished at 13-42 overall and 8-16 in the league.
The Cougars will be the No. 7 seed for next week's OVC Championship in Marion, Illinois.
Saturday, it was a seven-run fourth inning that proved to be the difference for the Lions, who needed to win at least two games to make the field. Lindenwood missed the tournament field based on winning percentage.
"Lindenwood played inspired baseball trying to get into the tournament," Lyons said. "They did what they needed to do. We had one bad inning today. Lindenwood had some well-placed hits and took advantage of some free bases.
The Lions used six hits, a walk and a hit batter to score seven times in the inning to snap a 1-1 tie. Lindenwood extended its lead with three runs in the fifth inning.
SIUE scored twice in the seventh and twice more in the eighth for the 11-5 final.
Brady Bunten led the way at the plate, going 2-4 with three RBIs. Brennan Orf was 2-4 with a double. Both players finished with five hits in the series. Bunten homered and drove in seven over the three games. Orf had four doubles.
"Brady had some really good production at the plate all weekend," Lyons said. "Brennan came up with some key doubles and continues to put up good at-bats."
Zeus Ponder started and allowed just one run over three innings. He struck out one. Garrett Helsel allowed four on six hits in 1/3 of an inning to take the loss.
The Cougars will now face No. 6 seed Tennessee Tech to open OVC tournament play Wednesday at Mt. Dew Park. SIUE must win two in the first day to advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
"The thing about the tournament, is that it is the chance to turn the page from the regular season," Lyons said. "We need to go out and play nine innings of good baseball Wednesday at 12:30. The guys are excited about the opportunity before them."
