EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE women's soccer scored twice in the first 10 minutes Friday night for its first win of the season.
The Cougars, 1-2, defeated visiting Purdue Fort Wayne 2-1 at Korte Stadium.
"We made it a priority to come out as strong, quick and imposing as we could, and we definitely did that," said SIUE Head Coach
Derek Burton. "I think they were on their heels, and we got two quick ones."
Kasey Neidhardt scored the first goal unassisted at 5:07 off a giveaway 22 yards away from the goal. She pushed it past PFW goalkeeper Samantha Castaneda to put the Cougars ahead.
Neidhardt would provide the assist on goal No. 2. This time she passed to
Taryn Moore who provided the quick finish in the box at 9:44.
"Even as the half wore on we got more chances," said Burton. "In game six, seven, eight, nine, ten down the road, we're going to finish those."
Purdue Fort Wayne, 1-2, used a pair of shots, one off the crossbar and the second a five-yarder from Rylee Vruggink to claw closer to the Cougars at 13:45. Morgan Reitano added the assist on the play.
SIUE outshot Purdue Fort Wayne 14-6.
"As long as we're continuing to create those opportunities, we'll be in good shape," said Burton.
Taylor Spiller earned the win in goal for the Cougars and had one save,
SIUE's next action is Sunday at IUPUI. Game time is noon central time in Indianapolis.
"I think
Grace Ferguson and
Kasey Neidhardt were really top level tonight for us. We'll continue to bank on them playing at a high level," added Burton.
