TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - SIUE women's soccer closed out the nonconference schedule Sunday, dropping a 2-1 decision at Indiana State.
"We had a tough battle today against a very spirited and hungry team," said SIUE Head Coach
Derek Burton. "Honestly, we didn't consistently match it unfortunately."
Mackenzie Hayes became the ninth different player to score a goal this season. She scored at 63:57 with an assist from
Kelsey Kehoe.
SIUE, 2-4-1, outshot Indiana State 12-9 and had six shots in each half.
"We were good enough in the attack to win the game, but not quite where we want to be as a team, in front of our own goal. But we'll get there," said Burton.
Indiana State opened the scoring at 41:50 on an unassisted goal by Linda Fasquelle. Mackenzie Kent collected the eventual game winner for the Sycamore, now 1-2-4, with a goal at 74:36 assisted by Brooklyn Woods.
"So we'll turn our focus on improving those intangible things that we are lacking a bit, as we move forward," said Burton. "All to play for still, and we're excited about get into conference play."
Ohio Valley Conference play begins Sept. 21 for the Cougars at Eastern Illinois.
