DELAND, Fla - SIUE softball closed out the Frank Griffin Classic with a 2-1 loss Sunday to Binghamton.
"We played a great game today, solid pitching from
Kelsey Ray, fantastic defense highlighted with
Danielle Shuey and
Jenna Herron in the outfield," said SIUE Head Coach
Ben Sorden.
SIUE dropped to 1-4 and next heads to Texas for a three-game series against Texas A&M Commerce. A doubleheader is scheduled for next Saturday followed by a single game next Sunday.
The Cougars, who recorded six hits, scored the fifth inning as pinch hitter
Madison Kearns delivered a base hit up the middle to drive home Herron. Herron led the Cougars with two hits.
Anna Henderson,
Lauryn Yslava and Kearns each had one apiece.
"Maddy Kearns came up with a clutch hit to get us on the board," said Sorden. "We had a few opportunities, but couldn't capitalize to push another run across. But overall we got better today."
Binghamton scored its two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a single by pinch hitter Emma Lawson.
