ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Golden Racket remained in the hands of the SIUE women's tennis team Saturday.
SIUE women's tennis defeated Lindenwood 6-1 and retained the traveling trophy between the two area schools.
The Cougars improved to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Lindenwood dropped to 5-12 and 1-3 in the OVC.
"I'm proud of how this group pulled together and fought as a team," said SIUE Head Coach
Adam Albertsen. "We have had different players step up in new spots in the lineup as well as different doubles, and we saw great success and fight."
SIUE's singles play dominated with five wins, including a tiebreaker victory for
Fabiola Perez over Yana Gaskell at No. 4 singles 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.
"It was great to see Fabi close out the tiebreaker win," Albertsen said. "Her fight and toughness is a symbol of Cougar tennis and how we want to close out the season."
Amelia Gorman continued her strong play this spring with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Sarah Ben Aba at No. 3 singles. Gorman now leads the Cougars with a team-leading 23-3 singles record. That includes a 3-0 record in OVC play as well as at No. 3 singles.
Jordan Schifano collected her 17th victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Paola Garcia at No. 2 singles.
Margaux Guibal Britt won her second straight match at No. 1 singles, outshining Fabiana Labrador 6-1, 6-1.
Paula Guillen Cerver also recorded her second win at No. 5 singles, besting Juliana Kulczynski 6-3, 6-1.
SIUE won all three of the doubles matches to collect the early doubles point. The Cougar are now 51-17 overall this season in doubles matches, a 75 percent winning clip.
The Cougars return to the home courts Tuesday where they will play host to Saint Louis at 2 p.m.Â
