EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Despite the similar score to Saturday's 16-inning contest, SIUE softball dropped the final game of a three-game series 2-1 to Southern Indiana Sunday at Cougar Field.
Starting the weekend with the longest game nationally among Division I teams this season, the Cougars came up short against Southern Indiana Sunday. SIUE dropped to 15-29 overall and 7-14 in the Ohio Valley Conference. USI improved to 18-18 overall and 12-9 in the OVC.
"I think all three ball games were played well. We're playing good softball. We just have to get over that hump," said SIUE Head Coach
Ben Sorden.
Emma Henderson, who was moved up in the lineup to the No. 2 slot, provided the big hit of the day. In the fourth inning, she tripled to right field and scored on a throwing error by USI right fielder Caroline Stapleton.
USI scored just two runs, both in the second inning, despite 10 hits against
Sydney Baalman today. Baalman fanned five and did not walk a batter Sunday.
"Sydney's last three outing have probably been the best of her season," said Sorden. "It was a very gritty performance, especially after 16 innings yesterday."
Josie Newman earned the win for the Screaming Eagles, her 15th of the season.
SIUE has its final nonconference game of the season scheduled for Wednesday at Saint Louis. Game time is 5 p.m.
