MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State swept a doubleheader from SIUE Thursday winning game one 14-3 before taking the second game 19-1.
The Cougars are now 12-14 in the OVC and 20-32-1 overall. Morehead State is 16-10 in the league and 32-22 overall.
The final game of the series is slated for 11 a.m. CT Friday morning.
SIUE starter Tyler DeLong didn't allow a hit through the first three innings. Morehead State broke on top in the fourth with three runs on three hits. The Eagles added to the lead in the fifth inning, scoring five times. Back-to-back home runs chased DeLong. Nick Gooden hit a three-run home run and Logan Castleman followed with a solo shot in the inning.
DeLong (3-6) allowed seven runs in four innings. He struck out four.
SIUE got on the board in the sixth inning. Drew Mize led off the inning with a double and scored on a one-out single by Ethan Willoughby.
Morehead State took advantage of a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth to score a run for a 9-1 lead.
Zack Floyd hit his fifth home run of the season in the seventh to trim the Eagles' lead back to 9-2.
Morehead State hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh to chase reliever Ian Benner. Colton Becker was followed by Roman Kuntz. Kuntz's 29th blast of the year made it 11-2. MSU used another SIUE error and two more hits to score three times in the eighth.
Freshman Mateo Casillas hit his first career home run in the ninth for the Cougars for the final margin.
Mize and Floyd each had two hits in game one for the Cougars.
Ryan Niedzwiedz was 2-4 and hit his team-leading 10th home run of the year in game two. The Eagles outhit the Cougars 21-4 in the contest.
SIUE starter Garrett Helsel (2-3) allowed six runs on eight hits over 1.2 innings.
Kuntz homered twice in game two and has an OVC-record 31 home runs for the season.
