Volleyball Starts Season with Victory Over Eastern Michigan


INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – SIUE volleyball opened their 2024 season with two matches at the IU-Indy Tournament on Friday. The Cougars took beat Eastern Michigan in the Morning but fall to Valparaiso later in the evening. 
 
Match One: SIUE vs. Eastern Michigan:
 
SIUE went three straight sets in their first match of the day, with scores of 25-22, 25-13, 25-20. SIUE had a hitting percentage of .337 in this first game, with one player hitting double digit kills and two not far behind. SIUE moves to 5-3 in season openers under the direction of Head Coach
Kendall Paulus.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
  • Sydney Hummert played all three sets leading the team with 13 total kills for a .321 clip. Hummert gained three aces and 5 digs. Kyndia Smith contributed 8 kills with a .429 hitting percentage, and Ainsley Ranstead had 7 kills with .500 hitting percentage.
  • Corinna Jones led the team with assists having 19 in the cougars first game of the season. Alyse Drifka contributed 13 assists as well.
  • Taya Nordmann, Smith and Hummert protected the net each having a total of 1.5 blocks in the match.
  • Olivia Hogan lead the team with 10 digs.
  • As a team the Cougars had 12 ace serves, 89 total attacks and a .337 hitting percentage, compared to EMU's 7 aces, 81 kills and .160 average.
 
Match Two: SIUE vs. Valparaiso:
SIUE went all five sets against the Valparaiso Beacons. The Cougars went strong in the first set, winning 25-21 hitting .179 percent in the first set. Valparaiso takes control in the second and third sets scores being 26-24 and 25-22. Cougars fight back in the fourth set (23-25) before falling in the fifth set to the Beacons (16,14).
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Hummert records a double double, her first of the season, with 17 kills and 18 digs
  • Bree Schreimann records second most kills in the game with 11 kills and a .385 hitting percentage
  • Jones recorded a .500 hitting percent with two kills. She also had 23 assists and eight digs.
