Volleyball Finishes on Top at Saluki Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill.- SIUE volleyball  (5-6) defeated Missouri State (6-7) in four sets, going 2-0. The Bears took the first two sets (25-20, 25-13), but the Cougars rallied to win the final three sets (25-18, 25-16, 15-8), extending their three-game win streak.
 
As a team, the Cougars recorded 63 kills at a .267 percentage, six service aces, 16 blocks, 57 assists and 70 digs. In comparison, the Bears had 54 kills, 10 service aces, five blocks, 20 assists and 67 digs.
 
The Cougars wrapped up nonconference play this weekend. Outside hitters Sydney Hummert and Ainsley Ranstead delivered notable performances against Missouri State. Hummert recorded her second double-double of the weekend, with 10 kills hitting at .128, and 14 digs. While Ranstead recorded her second double-double of the season, with 16 kills hitting at a .500 clip and 10 digs.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Middle blocker Nicole Medlin also recorded double-digit kills, finishing with 13. After this match, Medlin holds the second-highest hitting percentage in the OVC at .320.
  • Outside hitter Bree Schreimann recorded eight kills, three block assists, and three digs, while right-side hitter Kyndia Smith contributed nine kills, six block assists, one solo block and two digs.
  • Middle blocker Taya Nordmann had six kills, and led the team with nine total blocks, including eight assisted and one solo. Nordmann continues to lead the OVC in blocks, averaging 1.24 blocks a set.
  • Both setters Corinna Jones and Alyse Drifka had strong performances. Jones recorded 24 assists and one kill, while Drifka had 27 assists and five digs.
 
Up next, the Cougars continue their road stretch, taking on Western Illinois for their first conference match up of the season. The two-game series will take place September 27-28 in Macomb, Ill.
