Box Score ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Kira Kumada buried the final goal in penalty kicks Thursday as SIUE women's soccer advanced to the quarterfinals of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
SIUE and UT Martin battled to a 0-0 tie. The two teams played two 10-minute periods of overtime and settled the score on penalty kicks with the Cougars edging the Skyhawks 5-4.
The Cougars move on to face third-seeded Lindenwood Sunday in a 1 p.m. contest.
The game, played at Lindenwood's Harlen C. Hunter Stadium, was all about the goalkeepers. SIUE's Sarah Bozeman, a member of the OVC All-Newcomer team, would outlast UT Martin's Mac Titus. Bozeman finished with eight saves plus two crucial saves in penalty kicks. Titus collected seven saves and her single save in penalty kicks extended play one round.
SIUE and UT Martin were nearly even in most statistical categories. Both teams posted 13 shots with the Cougars' Claire Nieroda leading all players with six shots. SIUE had the edge in corner kicks 4-3.
That was a big difference from just four days ago when UT Martin defeated SIUE 5-1 on a rain-soaked field in Martin, Tennessee, during the regular season finale. The Cougars went toe to toe with the Skyhawks in the rematch, yielding 11 fewer shots than the first meeting.
SIUE picked up penalty kick goals from Savannah DeFini, Nieroda, Aleah Minehart, MaryClaire Imig and finally Kumada in the sixth round.
Bozeman would step up and record PK saves against UT Martin's Ayja McCleary in the second round and Addy McCleary in the sixth round.
