EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's tennis collected its first Ohio Valley Conference victory of the season Friday, a 4-1 triumph over Lindenwood at the Edwardsville Y Meyer Center.
The "Golden Racket" traveling trophy was up for grabs at the dual match, and SIUE secured the early momentum with a doubles win. Amelia Gorman and Stefaniya Anikina bested Lindenwood's Paola Garcia and Michelle Trochez at No. 1 doubles 6-1. Margaux Guibal Britt and Payton Tomichek clinched the doubles win with their 6-2 victory over Sarah Ben Aba and Fabiana Labrador at No. 2 doubles.
As SIUE yielded a team point at No. 6 singles, the Cougars powered through with three straight singles wins.
Gorman was victorious at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Labrador. Tomichek dismissed Megan Caffin at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2. Chloe Koons provided the match-winning team point with her 6-2, 7-5 victory over Yana Gaskell at No. 5 singles.
SIUE is now 11-3 overall and 1-0 in the OVC. Lindenwood drops to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the OVC.
Next up for SIUE is a Sunday OVC match at home against Southern Indiana. The match remains at 2 p.m. but will be played at the Edwardsville Y Meyer Center due to weather concerns.
