EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE's Amelia Gorman came from a set down Friday and rallied to give the Cougars a 4-2 victory over Illinois State at the Edwardsville Y Meyer Center.
Gorman clinched the winning point at No. 1 singles with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Silvia Pomarolli.
The Cougars improved to 9-2 for the season while Illinois State dropped to 6-5. Five of SIUE's nonconference victories have come against Missouri Valley Conference opponents.
SIUE found itself behind after surrendering the doubles point early, but the Cougars' Stefaniya Anikina evened it up with her No. 5 singles win over Nicole Iosio 6-1, 6-4.
Illinois State briefly regained the lead at No. 2 singles before SIUE leaped ahead.
SIUE's Paige Duncan collected a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles, and Payton Tomichek added a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 3 singles. That set up Gorman to close out the third and decisive set for her match and the team victory.
The Cougars now head to Hilton Head, South Carolina, where they play two matches against George Mason (Mar. 11) and South Carolina State (Mar. 13).
