Cougars Rally Past Tigers 6-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – SIUE women's tennis improved to 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference Sunday with a 6-1 road triumph at Tennessee State.

The match was played indoors at Hadley Park.

SIUE seized the momentum from the early moments of the match, collecting the double point behind wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Amelia Gorman and Stefaniya Anikina bested Louise Ratiu and Jovana Nikolic 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Chloe Koons and Paige Duncan downed Aroa Castillo 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Payton Tomichek led the singles charge with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ratiu at No. 3 singles. Margaux Guibal Britt made it 3-0 Cougars with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Sydney Brantley. Anikina, playing No. 4 singles for the first time this season, defeated Castillo 7-6, 6-2 for the clinching point.

Amelia Gorman and Chloe Koons also earned singles victory. Gorman recorded her team-leading 21st singles win with a 6-7, 6-3, 10-8 win over Francisca Gomez-Weiss at No. 1 singles. Koons was victorious over Victoria Cooksey at No. 6 singles 8-4.

Tennessee State dropped to 2-14 overall and 1-4 in the OVC.

SIUE closes out the regular season next Saturday at Eastern Illinois with a 2 p.m. match in Charleston.
