Edwardsville, IL —SIUE Athletics proudly recognizes Lendell & Karen Phelps, generous and passionate supporters of the Cougars Champions Fund (CCF). Lendell & Karen have been longstanding advocates for SIUE and have been loyal CCF members since the fund's inception. 

As proud alumni, Lendell and Karen have been fixtures in the SIUE community for many years. Lendell graduated from SIUE in 1971 with a degree in mass communication and Karen was a member of the class of 1970. Throughout the years, Lendell has served the university in many capacities including as former president of the alumni association and foundation board member. In 2003 he was recognized as a distinguished alumni for his personal and professional success and gave the commencement address at graduation. 

The couple reside in Edwardsville and have been long time court side basketball season ticket holders. They have been committed to consistently supporting all programs and have made numerous appearances at road games and fundraising events. As dedicated fans, they can typically be seen cheering on the Cougars with their family.

Q: What motivated you to become a member of the Cougars Champions Fund?  

"Chancellor Minor and his excellent work and coach Brian Barone and his excellent leadership." 

Q: Why do you place SIUE into your annual donation plan? 

"I believe in what the school is doing and the opportunity it gives for an excellent education in our area. I was lucky enough to be able to attend here years ago because I could afford it." 

Q: What is the most rewarding aspect of supporting SIUE Athletics? 

"To watch the recent transformation and success because of the new athletic director Andrew Gavin and his team. I mean that." 

Q: What excites you most about the future of the department? 

"To watch Gavin and his team and watch Barone and the success of the basketball team. We're just getting warmed up." 

Q: What message would you share with alumni, fans, and supporters about the importance of giving? 

"The university is one of the best things about our entire community and to support it is a great opportunity, yet obligation. It's an important part to the quality of life in our area."
